What is Avalanche?

Avalanche is an EVM compatible Proof of stake blockchain for building scalable permissionless and enterprise blockchains.

How Avalanche works

Avalanche has a similar architechture to Polkadot, with a primary network validating subnets/blockchains. However Avalanche consists of 3 separate blockchains validated by the Primary network.

  • Exchange chain
  • Contract chain
  • Platform chain

These cover the specific use cases related to their name.

Features

  • Compatible with Ethereum dapps
  • 4500 TPS

Avalanche has a focus on enterprise and compliance

  • Validators must be located in a given country
  • Validators must pass a KYC/AML checks
  • Validators must hold a certain license

Proof of stake

  • To stake for Avalanche a validator needs a minimum of 2000 AVAX.
  • Stakes are locked 2 – 52 weeks
  • Validators that lock their stake for longer are rewarded more.
  • Validators are incentivized to stay online and operate correctly as their rewards are based on proof-of-uptime and proof-of-correctness.
